My favorite legend: “the unknown story of La Pincoya”

La Huenchula arrived from the sea to see her parent on earth, but she came with something covered in a blanket. She told to her mother: “don’t open it, this doesn’t have to be seen by mortal eyes”. However, the old woman ignored this. She upon the pot and heard a scream for a child, but there was only crystalline water. When Huenchula came back, she got out angry with the old woman, because it's supposed to be a baby in there, her own daughter. After this, she decided to come back to the ocean where her husband, El Millalobo, could help her.

Under the sea, they saw a ship where there was a beautiful teenage girl with golden hair and seaweed across her body. She was their daughter: la Pincoya.

She is known by the inhabitants of Chiloé, as the person in charge of the marine abundance that the Chilote coasts give to the fishermen. They say that she appears on the beaches of Chiloé and dances across the water and sand. If she dances looking towards the ocean, it´s means the sea is in perfect condition for fishing. But if she dances looking towards the earth, the fishing is going to bad, cause the sea is in bad condition.

What I like from this legend is that most of the people, who aren’t from the south of Chile, have a bad interpretation about her. Some say that she was witch who drown fishermen. This is because the bad reputation that women had on legends and myths.
